Southlands School Council
Our School Council was given an amazing opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament in London. The visit to Houses of Parliament provided an invaluable means of expanding the experiences of our students and motivating students to learn democracy in our country; this has helped towards the school council and the progression of our council.
On the day we visited a range of London tourist attractions. Firstly, we went into the Houses of Parliament and completed a tour and workshop. We even were allowed to see the Queen's Crown room and to sit in Boris Johnson's seat! We also visited the London Aquarium and went onto the London Eye (Lunch with a view).
Our School Council attend the Equality & Diversity Conference for young people aged 11 years- 18 years; this conference was in partnership with Show Racism the Red Card and North Tyneside Young Mayor.
The students were involved with decision making and offering advice on various resources to support the Young Mayors campaign. They also shared their knowledge and completed workshops on issues such as, Feminism, Racism and Homophobia.
Our School Council were invited to a workshop at the Nissan Car Plant in Sunderland - this event was called the “Monozukuri Caravan”.
Students explored the exciting world of manufacturing through the use of a Lego production line in which the students set up and built model cars. Students were also given the opportunity to see, hear and use some of the tools that are used every day in building cars. Our school council had a fun filled day racing on the Formula 1 track and sitting in brand new cars!
